Five stories to know this Saturday across Indian River County, Florida and the nation.

1. VERO BEACH AIRPORT ADDS FOUR NEW BREEZE ROUTES

Vero Beach Regional Airport is expanding again as Breeze Airways adds four new routes, pushing VRB to 11 nonstop destinations. The expansion gives Treasure Coast travelers more options to fly closer to home instead of driving to larger South Florida or Orlando airports.

IRC Media has published a full local report with the new destinations, route details and what the continued expansion means for Vero Beach and Indian River County.

2. FLORIDA DENGUE OUTBREAK REACHES 252 LOCALLY ACQUIRED CASES

Florida has recorded 252 locally acquired dengue cases in 2026 through September 26, spread across seven counties and led overwhelmingly by Hillsborough County with 223 cases. The latest state surveillance does not list Indian River County, St. Lucie, Brevard, Martin or Okeechobee counties as having locally acquired dengue.

IRC Media's full report explains where the outbreak is concentrated, what local mosquito surveillance is finding and what Treasure Coast residents should know about symptoms and prevention.

3. PENTAGON ORDERS ONE-DAY VOTING STAND-DOWN FOR U.S. TROOPS

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed military commands to conduct a one-day voting stand-down by October 15, giving service members time to register, request absentee ballots and vote in the November 3 midterm elections. The directive is intended to recur during even-numbered election years and instructs commanders and voting-assistance officers to remain nonpartisan.

For Florida service members stationed outside the state, the order puts added attention on registration and absentee-voting deadlines as Election Day approaches.

4. TRUMP ANNOUNCES ONE-TIME $90 MEDICARE PAYMENT FOR MORE THAN 20 MILLION ENROLLEES

President Donald Trump announced that more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees will receive a one-time $90 payment intended to help offset premium costs. The White House says the payments will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, with most eligible recipients receiving direct deposits in early October and others receiving mailed checks.

Most Medicare Part B enrollees are eligible, but people whose premiums are paid by Medicaid and those who pay an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount are excluded.

5. ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT FORCES RETAKE KEY AIRPORT IN TIGRAY

Ethiopian government forces and allied fighters have retaken Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, according to Reuters sources. The airport was among three airfields seized when renewed fighting began in September, and control of the broader city remains a developing situation.

The renewed clashes are the most serious escalation since Ethiopia's 2020-2022 civil war and raise concerns about a wider regional conflict.
