VERO BEACH, Fla. — Authorities are continuing to investigate a fatal incident Sunday evening after a man was struck and killed by a southbound Brightline train near the 16th Street railroad crossing in Vero Beach.

According to police reports, the incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on June 21 near the crossing west of U.S. 1. Investigators said the train came to a stop approximately 200 yards south of the crossing following the collision.

Train conductors told officers the unidentified man emerged from a wooded area east of the tracks as the train approached. The southbound Brightline train was traveling approximately 79 mph at the time of the incident.

According to witness statements provided to police, the man ran toward the tracks and lay face down in the train’s path. Despite emergency braking efforts, the train was unable to stop before striking him.

The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Fort Pierce. Authorities have not yet released his identity pending notification of next of kin.

A Continuing Safety Concern Along Florida’s Rail Corridor

The incident is the latest in a series of fatalities involving Brightline trains across Florida.

A joint investigation by the Miami Herald and WLRN found Brightline trains were associated with more than 180 deaths between 2017 and mid-2025, making the rail service one of the deadliest passenger rail systems in the nation on a per-mile basis. Researchers found an average of one fatality approximately every 13 days of service. Many of the incidents involved pedestrians, motorists attempting to cross tracks, or suspected suicides. According to Federal Railroad Administration data reported by WPBF, Indian River County recorded two Brightline-related fatalities during 2024, while neighboring Martin County recorded three. St. Lucie County reported no Brightline fatalities during that period. (WPBF)
