SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has temporarily suspended access to its Flock Safety license plate reader (LPR) camera system after an internal investigation uncovered what officials described as improper use of law enforcement databases by one of its detectives.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Detective Brandy Almany was arrested and terminated after an internal audit allegedly revealed she accessed multiple law enforcement databases without authorization for personal reasons. Investigators say the activity involved monitoring an individual connected to a personal matter rather than a legitimate criminal investigation.

In response, Sheriff Pat Breeden announced the agency has suspended use of its Flock Safety camera network while a comprehensive review of policies, training, and oversight procedures is conducted. Officials said the move is intended to help restore public confidence and ensure the technology is used only for lawful investigative purposes.

What Are Flock Cameras?

Flock Safety cameras are automated license plate reader (ALPR) systems installed throughout communities to assist law enforcement in locating stolen vehicles, missing persons, wanted suspects, and vehicles connected to criminal investigations.

The cameras capture images of license plates and may also identify vehicle characteristics such as make, model, color, and other distinguishing features.
