VERO BEACH, Fla. — A Florida Department of Corrections inmate who escaped from a work-release program in Volusia County has been captured in Indian River County after authorities tracked him to a Vero Beach apartment where he was allegedly hiding with his girlfriend.

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Jalyn Tyler Binion escaped from a Department of Corrections work-release facility on Sunday before making his way to Indian River County. Investigators say Binion’s girlfriend picked him up from the facility and drove him to her apartment on Azalea Lane in Vero Beach. Authorities located him there the following day after receiving information from the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.

Attempted Second Escape

Deputies, U.S. Marshals, and members of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office surrounded the second-floor apartment Monday afternoon.

According to the arrest report, officers announced their presence and ordered Binion to surrender. Instead, investigators say he opened a rear window, kicked out the screen, and attempted to climb from the second-story apartment in what authorities described as an effort to escape once again.

After deputies issued a K-9 warning, Binion retreated back inside the apartment.

When officers were unable to breach the front door, they entered through a sliding glass door before taking Binion into custody without further incident.

Body camera footage later released by the Sheriff’s Office captured portions of the operation.

Facing Additional Charges

Binion is now facing an additional charge of attempted escape stemming from the Vero Beach incident.

He was booked into the Indian River County Jail without bond and is expected to be transferred back to Volusia County to continue serving his sentence.

Court records indicate Binion had been incarcerated on multiple grand theft convictions after entering the Florida Department of Corrections in late 2025. Records also show he had been scheduled for release later this year.

Why This Case Stands Out

Sheriff Eric Flowers said cases like this are uncommon because inmates housed in lower-security work-release programs are typically nearing the end of their sentences and preparing to transition back into the community.

“This was a person who was in lower-level custody preparing for release,” Flowers said, noting that inmates with much longer sentences are generally more likely to attempt escape.

While escapes from Florida Department of Corrections facilities are relatively rare, this incident highlights the coordination between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies when a fugitive crosses county lines.

Girlfriend Initially Detained

Investigators also detained Binion’s girlfriend during the operation on suspicion of harboring or aiding an escaped prisoner.

According to sheriff’s officials, she later cooperated with investigators by confirming Binion was inside the apartment. Authorities ultimately released her, and no additional charges have been announced.

Growing Role of Regional Task Forces

The arrest also demonstrates the increasing role of regional fugitive task forces operating throughout Florida.

Sheriff Flowers noted that the same U.S. Marshals task force involved in Binion’s capture has assisted in several recent high-profile arrests involving suspects who traveled into Indian River County after committing crimes elsewhere.

As population growth continues along Florida’s east coast, law enforcement agencies increasingly rely on real-time intelligence sharing, license plate recognition technology, and interagency cooperation to quickly locate fugitives before they can establish themselves in another community.

The investigation remains active as Binion is transferred back into Department of Corrections custody.
