Five stories to know this Sunday across Indian River County, Florida, the nation and the world.

1. TEEN DIES AFTER SHOOTING NEAR GARCIA'S BOAT RAMP

A 17-year-old boy died after being shot late Friday in the 3700 block of County Road 512 near Garcia's Boat Ramp in Indian River County. Deputies provided lifesaving aid before he was taken to Sebastian River Medical Center and later flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators continue to describe the shooting as isolated, and no suspect or motive has been publicly announced.

IRC MEDIA FOLLOW-UP: IRC Media has already published coverage of this shooting. Watch for updates on the victim's identification, any suspect or vehicle description, arrests, motive and additional statements from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information can contact the Indian River County Sheriff's Office at 772-569-6700 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS.

2. MONDAY IS THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR FLORIDA'S NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION

Indian River County voters have one day left to register for the November 3 general election. Florida's registration deadline is Monday, October 5.

Early voting in Indian River County is scheduled for October 19 through October 31, and the vote-by-mail request deadline is October 22 at 5 p.m.

IRC MEDIA FOLLOW-UP: IRC Media has already published voter-guide coverage. Readers should use the full IRC Media voter guide for registration, early-voting, vote-by-mail and Election Day information.

3. FLORIDA AMENDMENT 1 CREATES AN UNUSUAL POLITICAL SPLIT

Florida Amendment 1 would increase the maximum size of the state's Budget Stabilization Fund from 10% to 25% of general revenue collections and generally require annual transfers of up to $750 million until the higher reserve level is reached.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Jolly said Saturday that he supports the amendment, while Gov. Ron DeSantis continues urging voters to reject it. Supporters say a larger reserve would better prepare Florida for recessions, hurricanes and other emergencies, while opponents argue surplus money should remain available for other priorities such as tax relief.

The amendment requires 60% voter approval to pass.

4. TRUMP DEFENDS AI DATA CENTERS DURING OHIO MIDTERM RALLY

President Donald Trump used his Saturday night rally in Ohio to defend large AI data centers while campaigning for Republican Sen. Jon Husted and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

Trump argued that states risk losing major investment if they reject the projects, while critics continue raising concerns about electricity costs, water use, land consumption and local infrastructure.

IRC MEDIA FOLLOW-UP: IRC Media has already covered data-center controversy and related Florida policy questions. The issue is increasingly relevant to Florida as national arguments over economic development, utility costs and local control continue.

5. BRAZIL VOTES TODAY IN CLOSELY WATCHED PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Brazilian voters are at the polls today in a presidential election led by incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of valid votes, the top two candidates advance to an October 25 runoff. The election also includes congressional and gubernatorial contests across Brazil.

The result could affect U.S.-Brazil relations, trade, policy toward China, the Amazon and regional politics. IRC Media will watch for confirmed results rather than rely on polling or projections.
