VERO BEACH, Fla. — A 25-year-old Vero Beach man is facing numerous felony charges after authorities say a birthday celebration ended with three women being attacked early Friday morning.

Collin Ryan Smith was booked into the Indian River County Jail at approximately 3:49 a.m. July 17. Jail records listed his bond at $250,000.

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to a Vero Beach residence shortly before 2 a.m. following reports of a disturbance. According to the arrest affidavit, Smith became angry after other people at the gathering refused to drive him to a bar.

Witnesses told investigators that Smith began yelling and was asked to leave the residence. When one woman attempted to get past him, Smith allegedly grabbed her by the hair, pulled her into the kitchen and strangled her until she lost consciousness.

A second woman told deputies she awakened after hearing the disturbance. When she left her bedroom, Smith allegedly grabbed her hair, dragged her outside and threw her to the ground.

According to the affidavit, a third woman attempted to intervene after witnessing Smith throw another woman into a ditch. Smith allegedly struck her in the mouth, knocked her down and later pinned her against a vehicle while applying pressure to her neck.

A man who witnessed the attacks reportedly fought Smith in an effort to protect the women. A nearby resident also provided deputies with a statement describing a man lifting a woman and slamming her to the ground.

Investigators reported finding a bullet inside one of the bedrooms. The woman who occupied the room told deputies it had fallen from Smith’s pocket.

Smith allegedly left the residence in a Ford pickup truck, prompting deputies to issue an alert to surrounding law-enforcement units. He was later stopped in the 1400 block of 96th Street.

Deputies said Smith smelled of alcohol and had a glass smoking device in his pocket. He reportedly refused breath-alcohol testing and denied consuming alcohol or attacking anyone at the residence.

Authorities also recovered ammunition from the truck. A handgun was found in the roadway near the location of the traffic stop, and investigators said video appeared to show an object being thrown from Smith’s vehicle.

According to Indian River County court records, Smith faces the following charges:

• Attempted felony murder

• Two counts of battery by strangulation

• Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

• Possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon

• Criminal mischief

• Driving under the influence

• Driving with a suspended or revoked license

• Refusal to submit to DUI testing

• Possession or use of drug paraphernalia

The allegations against Smith have not been proven in court. He is presumed innocent unless convicted.
