MIAMI, Fla. — An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport Sunday afternoon, struck multiple vehicles and caught fire, triggering a massive emergency response and major flight disruptions.

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as 21 Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft. The FAA said the plane overran the runway after landing at MIA at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday, September 6, after arriving from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Miami International Airport said Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the airport’s diagonal runway and became disabled at the northwest end of the airport.

Independent journalist Nick Sortor was among those sharing early footage and information about the incident on X as reports began emerging from Miami. IRC Media is referencing that social-media reporting while relying on the FAA, Miami International Airport, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and other established reporting for confirmed details.

PLANE STRUCK MULTIPLE VEHICLES

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the aircraft struck multiple vehicles after leaving the runway. More than 60 Fire Rescue units responded.

Crews arrived to find the aircraft on fire with heavy flames and smoke showing. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and assess patients.

Officials reported multiple patients. Local 10 reported that Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said multiple people were injured, but officials had not released the extent of those injuries at the time of this update.

Images from the scene showed the aircraft resting on its belly beside a roadway near two semi-trucks. Despite the fire, much of the aircraft appeared intact.

AIRPORT OPERATIONS DISRUPTED

The crash forced the closure of all runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport and prompted a full FAA ground stop while emergency crews responded.

The Associated Press reported that about 250 flights had been delayed by late Sunday afternoon. The FAA warned that delays were likely to continue as operations resumed at a reduced rate.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE AIRCRAFT

The FAA identified the aircraft as a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane operating as 21 Air Flight 7598 for Amazon’s Prime Air network.

The flight originated in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was landing in Miami when it overran the runway.

Because this was a cargo flight, early social-media references to an unknown number of “passengers” should be treated cautiously. Officials had not released a confirmed accounting of those aboard at the time of this update.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Authorities have not announced what caused the aircraft to overrun the runway.

The FAA said it will investigate. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information about the crash.

Until investigators release additional findings, claims about mechanical failure, weather, braking, pilot actions or other possible causes remain speculation.
