Reported Gunfire in Vero Lake Estates Delays Treasure Coast Elementary Dismissal
00:00 / 01:23

VERO LAKE ESTATES, Fla. — 8/19/2026 - A report of gunfire in Vero Lake Estates prompted a response from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday afternoon and temporarily delayed dismissal at nearby Treasure Coast Elementary School.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, on August 19th IRCSO received a 911 call at approximately 3:26 p.m. reporting gunshots in the area of 7700 98th Avenue.

Deputies responded to the area and began searching for the source of the reported gunfire.

Because the incident occurred near Treasure Coast Elementary School around dismissal time, students were held at the school beyond their normal dismissal as a precaution.

Authorities emphasized that there was no known threat to the school and that holding students was a precautionary measure while deputies investigated the report.

The School District of Indian River County remained in contact with parents during the delay.

By approximately 4:25 p.m., authorities had cleared the area and the school was able to begin its dismissal process.

The Sheriff’s Office said there was no indication at that time that a crime had occurred.

IRC Media will monitor for any additional information released by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
