00:00 / 01:53

SEBASTIAN, Fla. — A 16-year-old girl has died after falling approximately 29 feet through the roof of an abandoned four-story building in Sebastian, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and fire rescue personnel responded to 9846 Riverside Preserve Drive at approximately 10:35 p.m. Saturday after a 911 caller reported that a teenager had fallen from a concrete structure and was critically injured.

When deputies arrived, they found the injured girl and a group of other juveniles on the second floor of the abandoned building.

Investigators say the group had been trespassing on the property and had made their way onto the roof. The 16-year-old reportedly fell through a hole in the roof, dropping approximately 29 feet to the floor below.

One of the juveniles in the group knew CPR and immediately began performing lifesaving measures.

The girl was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where she later died from her injuries.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. According to the Sheriff’s Office, all evidence at this time indicates the incident was accidental.

The girl’s identity has not been released.

The Sheriff’s Office is also reminding parents and teenagers of the potentially deadly dangers associated with entering and climbing abandoned structures, as well as the legal consequences of trespassing on private property.
